Tamla Ray

Tamla first came to hot yoga because of her deep and abiding love for sweating. At one point, she had four separate gym memberships. She always believed that if a physical activity did not make her leak water from her skin then it probably wasn’t worthwhile. In 2012, a coworker told her about Sumits Hot Yoga. After her first class, she was weak, tired, drenched, and absolutely in love. She continued her practice at Sumits – later Soul Sweat -on and off for over a decade. She fully committed to her practice in 2023 after losing her mother. Her yoga practice provided a physical and mental space for her to occupy as she worked through her grief. She also gained a group of travel buddies as she is a frequent Soulful Yoga Retreat participant.

In 2024, Tamla completed her 200-hour teacher training with Melinda Nag. She later supplemented her practice with Melinda’s yin training and is now a certified yin teacher. She greatly looks forward to growing as a teacher and hopes to achieve her 300-hour teacher certification in the near future.

Tamla has spent the last 20 years in service to her community. First as a criminal prosecutor, next as a magistrate judge, and currently as a criminal defense attorney. She sees her role as a yoga instructor as a natural fit. Tamla strives to be supportive of her students’ growth as yoga practitioners and tries to provide a challenging, fun space for them to move. She always encourages her students to show themselves grace and not to take themselves too seriously.

At home, Tamla is the pack leader for her Siberian Husky mix, Lola, and her German Shepherd mix, Luna. She keeps her classes hot and the music chill, and she hopes to see y’all all on your mats really soon!
